Manchester Terriers are one of the most versatile and hardy breeds and are ideal pets in many circumstances. They are as happy living in an apartment being a lap dog as being a working service dog or keeping up with an active family of children. They have a life expectancy of 13-17 years. Manchester Terriers come in 2 sizes: Toy Manchester Terriers are less than 12 lbs. and Standard Manchester Terriers are 12-22 lbs. Though different sizes, they are similar in temperament, body type and athletic ability. Manchester Terriers long to be by people and are eager to please. They uniquely like to be in physical contact with their owners and will preferentially cuddle next to you.
The Manchester Terrier is a thinking breed and keenly observant. They prefer to stand back and evaluate a situation before making judgement. They are devoted to their owner. Manchester Terriers can be a vocal breed if not trained properly. Early socialization to many situations and a variety of people, as well as, obedience training is a must to make a well rounded pet. Puppy socialization and obedience classes are a great way for a new owner to bond with their Manchester.
Manchester Terriers are easy to house train using a dog crate and leash walking using timely intervals, such as after playtime, eating or drinking. A Manchester Terrier may need some additional encouragement when the weather is cold or rainy outside.
Manchester Terriers excel in a variety of dog sports including conformation, obedience, rally, agility, lure coursing, barn hunt, earth dog work, tracking, flyball, scent work, as well as, freestyle dancing. They are a breed that loves and needs a challenge. Manchesters are great with children if they have been socialized with children. They are great companions and love to romp and play and even play dress up with their young companions. Your child should be taught a respectful approach and handling of any dog. It is important to remember that no dog should ever be left unsupervised with a young child. There are many scholarship programs available through the American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club and 4-H programs for children participating in dog sports. The Manchester Terrier is a short haired breed with an easy care coat. An occasional quick bath is all that is needed to maintain the coat. Toenail trimming is required to properly maintain alignment of joints. Toenails can either be trimmed or ground down with an electric file (Dremel or similar tool) about every 2 weeks – once a week if you are thinking of showing your dog.
Manchester Terriers are sensitive to cold weather and can be reluctant to go outside in cold weather or rain. A coat or sweater may be required in colder weather. A good rule of thumb would be if you are cold without a coat, then your Manchester would probably like a coat or sweater as well.
